HOW WE WORK
We ask authors to submit a synopsis and three sample chapters. After a screening process, selected authors will be asked to submit their full manuscript by email. Those that Coombs Moylett Maclean believe to show promise will be offered representation.
FICTION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We are one of a few literary agencies which accept unsolicited manuscripts. If you would like to submit material, please read these guidelines.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We specialize in well written commercial fiction, particularly in the genres of historical fiction, crime/ mystery/suspense and thrillers, women's fiction across a spectrum ranging from chick-lit to sagas to contemporary and literary fiction. We are also looking to build a children's list concentrating on Young Adult fiction. We do not handle poetry, plays or scripts for film & TV. Please note that we cannot accept faxed submission.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT
FIRST STAGE In the first instance, we request authors to submit via our submission form a covering letter and a synopsis the first three chapters
Covering letter Your covering letter should tell us a bit about you and your career to date, and whether or not you have sent your novel to other agents or publishers.
The synopsis The synopsis should be about one or two sides long, and be a simplified explanation of the plot, mentioning the setting, the theme and the characters. It should not be a blurb or a teaser. We would like a brief description of the story from beginning to end.
The first three chapters Please make sure your manuscript is set out as described below, and print your name, address and a contact number and/or email address on the cover.
SECOND STAGE After an initial reading, selected authors will be asked to submit their full manuscript by email. Please make sure that your manuscript: is double or 1.5 line-spaced has nice wide margins is in a type size no smaller than 12-point (preferably Times New Roman) is fully numbered, page by page Please print your name, address and a contact number and/or email address on the cover of your manuscript.
NON-FICTION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
We consider most non-fiction particularly, history, biography, current affairs and cookery. Please describe what the book is about and why it needs to be written and published now. Who you are and your credentials for writing the book Where the book would sit on the shelves, including similar or competing books that have already been published. A chapter of sample text (usually taken from an early part of the book, but not the introduction). An outline of chapters (a page per chapter, written in full prose).
